2009 Home Run Derby: Prince is King

The 2005 Derby was the first "we are the world" long ball contest. From 1985 through 1990, the Home Run Derby was structured as a two-inning event with each participant getting five outs per inning. Since 1991, eight to ten players, were chosen to participate in a three round contest to determine the Home Run Derby Champion. Each player received ten outs per round as they attempted to hit as many home runs as they could. The 2009 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby was a home run hitting contest in Major League Baseball between four batters each from the National League and American League. The derby was held on July 13, 2009, at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri, the host location of the 2009 MLB All-Star Game.

Therefore, the players with the four highest totals after Round 1 advanced to Round 2, and the players with the two highest sum of Round 1 and 2 advanced to the finals. Tejada slugged a then-record 27 homers, which would hold for just one season before Abreu shattered his mark. Guerrero took home his first Derby victory by hitting 17 homers and defeating the Blue Jays' Rios in the final. Despite fans packing into McCovey Cove outside the Giants' home ballpark in kayaks and rafts, none of the participants hit a "splash hit." Gartrell has been a consistent slugger all season for the Barons.

Gold Ball

An out is recorded on any ball that isn't hit for a home run. The top 4 hitters who total the most home runs in the 1st round will advance to round two, and the top 2 hitters in the second round will advance to the finals. A look at the eight contestants, including two high school players, for the Triple-A All-Star Home Run Derby tonight at PGE Park. The six professional players have combined to hit 96 home runs through Saturday. By the time Howard has gotten to 7 outs, he’s put up 5 home runs, giving him 12 total and putting him in the lead. Howard then gets two quick outs but manages to hit the Golden Ball out three and ends the round with 15 total.

The only exception was 2005, when Major League Baseball changed the selection criteria so that eight players represented their home countries instead of their respective leagues. The change was believed to be in promotion of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, played in March 2006. In 2006, the selection of four players from each league resumed. In 2011, the format was revised so that team captains selected the individual sides.

Big Albert really struggled in the first round and doesn’t start off well in the bat-off, hitting one to the outfield. However, his second and third swings are where Albert gets his groove back, as he sends them deep into the bleachers. Mauer goes up hacking and wastes his first three swings on two hits to the outfield and a foul ball. His fourth swing is right at the base of the wall and then his fifth falls short as well, so Mauer ends up with a goose egg.

The swing off reverted to one minute in 2019, the first year in which it was used. For the first time in Derby history, Shohei Ohtani became both the first pitcher and the first Japanese player to participate in 2021. Dawson went deep four times, accounting for half the home runs hit by the field of four. McGwire, who would eventually set a new single-season home run record with 70 in 1998, won his first and only Derby in '92.

The 2009 Southern League All-Star Game will be played on Monday, July 13 at Regions Park in Birmingham, AL. HOOVER, AL - The Birmingham Barons announced on Tuesday the participants for the 2009 Southern League Home Run Derby Presented by Virginia College. Frazier has been a force all season for the North Division's top offensive team. The former first-round draft pick has hit eight home runs and slugged at a .495 clip this season. Cook used a huge month of June to catapult himself into the top of the league rankings. The outfielder knocked eight home runs and 29 RBI in the month while slugging a ridiculous .613. He currently ranks second in the Southern League with 17 home runs while his .523 slugging percentage places him fourth.

He logged the 10 longest home runs of the night, as well as the 20 hardest-hit blasts, topping out at 120.4 mph, per Statcast™. Since 1985, many of Major League Baseball's most prolific home run hitters have competed on the All-Star stage in the Home Run Derby. Below is a look at the history of baseball's annual slugfest, which has undergone a number of format changes throughout its 30-plus years.

He is tied for third in the Southern League with 15 home runs, despite not hitting more than five in any month this season. On June 19, Gartrell had his finest moment of the season, hitting a game-tying, two-run home run in the fifth before hitting another two- run, walk-off home run in ninth. He produced all four RBI in the 4-2 win against Huntsville. His .533 slugging percentage ranks him second in the league.

Wins by team

Prior to the 1985 All-Star Game being played, a new tradition was born when Major League Baseball adopted an official format for a Home Run Derby. Though these types of contests had taken place before, this was the first time it was going to be acknowledged by the League. Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies, who came second to Pujols in the NL fan vote, was one of a number of players who confirmed their participation, although official invitations have yet to be confirmed. American League fan vote winner Evan Longoria has also made comments about not wanting to hit.

Recorded only five of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Recorded only seven of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Since the inaugural derby in 1985, the event has seen several rule changes, evolving from a short outs-based competition, to multiple rounds, and eventually a bracket-style timed event. The story of the night heading into the 2022 Derby was Pete Alonso's quest for his third straight title. By the end, it was all about the two young superstars in Soto and Rodríguez. The two put on a show all night, but Soto walked it off in the final round with 19 home runs.

History

Stone Bridge Bulldog Johnny Bladel, who will play baseball next year at James Madison University, is one of eight players selected to participate in the Home Run Derby contest on Friday evening... Nelson Cruz is up first and he just starts lighting it up, hitting some humongous dingers. With five outs, he’s got five homers, but then he gets four quick outs without another home run. With the Golden Ball, he gets his final out and Nelson Cruz is done with five total in the final round. Fielder gets three quick outs, then hits a couple dingers, then gets a couple more outs, then hits a couple more homers. With still five outs to give, he has tied Ryan Howard with 15 total, so one more homer advances him.
