The four-minute round length was made permanent in 2016, while the minute of bonus time was reduced to 30 seconds and required two home runs of at least 440 feet (134.1 m). Each batter is allowed one time-out during each round, and two in the finals. Beginning in 1991, the format changed to a 3-round contest. From 1991 to 2006, 8-10 players were selected and hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 10 outs in each round.

Cruz has to be a little stiff, it’s been two hours since he hit his first round homers. It doesn’t seem to bother him too much, though, as he ends up with 5 for the 2nd round and 16 total. He gets the ninth out without having hit enough to advance to the finals but he takes the Golden Ball for a ride to the left field upper deck, so his total is now 11. He then gets the last out and ends up with 11 home runs total, which is probably not enough to advance. MLB needs to start opening up these contests to other players and not just selected All-Stars.
Most watched Home Run Derbys
Williams finished his senior season with 6 home runs for the Bulldogs, and came close to several more yard balls this spring. The shortstop will be heading to William and Mary next fall to play for the Tribe, and should be considered a favorite to win Home Run Derby. Well if it was a home "rum" contest I just might make a good showin'..but home "run"? I used to drink rum at home, but i didn't wear a derby... Now i have switched to bourbon while wearing a baseball cap ...
A "home run" in the context of the competition, consists of hitting a baseball in fair territory out of the playing field on the fly. It differs from a home run hit during legal gameplay in that the batter is not competing against a pitcher and a defensive team attempting to make an out. In the Home Run Derby, all pitches are purposefully thrown slowly and at a closer range than the official 60 feet 6 inches (18.44 m) distance, usually by a coach behind a pitching screen. In addition, like batting practice, the batter remains in the batter's box after each swing, and does not run, nor circle the bases to score a run. For 2022, the additional bonus time requirements reverted back to two home runs of at least 440 feet. Separate from the regular home run derby, if the All-Star Game itself is tied after nine innings, a second home run derby will be held to determine the winner.
Other Recent Birmingham Barons Stories
Seven-time All-Star Parker emerged from a 10-player field that included four future Hall of Famers -- Jim Rice, Eddie Murray, Carlton Fisk and Sandberg -- to win the inaugural Home Run Derby with six homers. The 1998 Derby marked the first live telecast of the event, as fans tuned in to see Griffey win his second trophy. Griffey almost didn't participate, but he was booed in batting practice the day prior and ultimately changed his mind. While Morneau took home the night's top prize, Hamilton stole the show by belting a first-round record 28 home runs, including a run of 13 on consecutive swings. Only one player had ever hit that many in a full Derby before . Stanton peppered Petco Park with baseballs en route to a Derby-record 61 homers.

After two quick outs, he finally belts one to left center field but then gets five more quick outs before he finally gets his second and third homers. He has to get six to advance, five to get into a playoff for the last spot. Weather concerns in 2015 led to a reduction in time from five minutes per round to four minutes. The clock was not stopped in the final minute, and one minute of bonus time was granted only for hitting two home runs of at least 425 feet (129.5 m). In 2000, the field reverted to the current four-player-per-league format.
Home Run Derby
Only three participants, Yoenis Céspedes, Stanton, and Pete Alonso, have won the Home Run Derby without being selected to the All-Star Game. Alonso broke Guerrero's first-round record in 2021 with 35 homers on his way to his second straight Derby Title . The field of players selected currently consists of four American League players and four National League players.

Previously, sponsors like MasterCard and Chevrolet had given away 500 airline tickets and automobiles had home run balls hit designated banners. The winner of the event was Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers. I still think Pujols has a good chance---not because he leads the world in homers, but he's VERY pitch selective.
Derby history: Looking back at past slugfests
Recorded only five of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Recorded only seven of ten outs before hitting winning home run. Since the inaugural derby in 1985, the event has seen several rule changes, evolving from a short outs-based competition, to multiple rounds, and eventually a bracket-style timed event. The story of the night heading into the 2022 Derby was Pete Alonso's quest for his third straight title. By the end, it was all about the two young superstars in Soto and Rodríguez. The two put on a show all night, but Soto walked it off in the final round with 19 home runs.
Prior to the 1985 All-Star Game being played, a new tradition was born when Major League Baseball adopted an official format for a Home Run Derby. Though these types of contests had taken place before, this was the first time it was going to be acknowledged by the League. Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies, who came second to Pujols in the NL fan vote, was one of a number of players who confirmed their participation, although official invitations have yet to be confirmed. American League fan vote winner Evan Longoria has also made comments about not wanting to hit.
Thomas launched a 519-foot homer that reached the upper deck in center field, and Griffey won his first of three Derby crowns in the 1994 contest. Martinez surprised by outlasting decorated sluggers such as Frank Thomas, McGwire, Griffey and Walker to become the first Yankees player to win the Derby. This year featured six representatives from the AL and four from the NL. Sosa out-hit the field with 12 homers in Round 1, but he ran out of gas in the finals, losing 7-1 to Giambi in Milwaukee. Pujols and the Yankees' Jason Giambi each lit up the scoreboard in the first two rounds, but Pujols was bested by Anderson, 9-8, in a dramatic final round in Chicago's South Side.

Should there be a tie after either of the first two rounds, a "Swing-Off" takes place. In a Swing-Off, each tied player gets 5 swings to get as many home runs as possible. Home runs hit during a first round Swing-Off does not count towards the player's total going into the second round.
